Applying for accommodation

How do I apply for accommodation?

Please see the online guides to applying for accommodation for undergraduates and postgraduates, and the information pages for prospective international students.

How do I make a preference for accommodation?

Prior to the allocation period you will be sent a letter or email with details of how to submit an accommodation preference online. It will ask you to complete an online form. You will need to indicate a preference for either an ensuite room or a standard room, provide a mobile number for SMS (text message) alerts and provide an email address. Please note that preferences cannot be guaranteed, but this data will assist the Accommodation Office with the allocation procedure.

Your accommodation allocation

When will I find out my allocation?

If you are awaiting A-Level results, your allocation will be carried out after the results are released. You should expect to receive an offer of accommodation shortly after the release of A-Level results, and we hope to have allocated most students by the first Wednesday in September. If you already have an Unconditional Firm Offer with the University you should expect to have received your Allocation Pack by the second week in August.

For more information please see the online guides to accommodation allocation for undergraduates and postgraduates and the information pages for prospective international students.

How do I accept my allocation?

If you have provided an email address to the Accommodation Office you will need to check your messages on a regular basis. When you receive your allocation email it will provide you with details on how to accept your allocation online and pay your £250 (2011/12) deposit to secure your room.

If you have not provided an email address your allocation pack will be sent to your home address, along with full details of how to accept your allocation.

Why didn't I get my preference for accommodation?

Accommodation will be allocated taking into account your preferred type of accommodation. However, as some types of accommodation are oversubscribed, obtaining your preference cannot be guaranteed and an alternative may be offered.

I'm away over the allocation period - how will I receive my allocation pack?

If you think your Allocation Pack may arrive while you are away, please ensure that someone responsible at home is able to deal with the paperwork. If you are able to access your emails while you are away, please contact the Accommodation Office with your email address if you have not already provided one. Details of your accommodation offer will be sent to you via email. You should check your messages regularly so that you can respond to your offer in good time. Please ensure that you check both your Inbox and Junk Mail folder and ensure you have not met your email limit.

What happens if I do not reply by the deadline?

If you do not reply by the deadline date stated on your Tenancy Agreement your allocation will be cancelled.

I can't pay my deposit - what will happen with my allocation?

If you are unable to pay your deposit by the deadline stated on your Tenancy Agreement your allocation will be cancelled.

Applying for early or late arrival

Early arrival

If you wish to arrive earlier than the date specified on your Tenancy Agreement, then you will need to contact your Residences Manager to see if this is possible. Once you have confirmed accommodation on campus (paid your £250 (2011/12) deposit and accepted your Tenancy Agreement), you can submit a request online. Your Residences Manager will then contact you with further information.

If you move in before the start of your contract you will be invoiced for the extra days once term has started, usually in October.

If it is not possible for your room to be ready before the agreed date then we can provide you with a list of guest houses in the local area.

For more arrival information, please see the Residences Regulations Arrivals section.

Late arrival

For information on late arrivals, please see the Residences Regulations Arrivals section.

Paying your fees

When are the accommodation fees due?

Residents will be charged accommodation fees for the tenancy period stated in their Tenancy Agreement. For undergraduate students the accommodation fees are paid in three termly instalments, and for postgraduates in four termly instalments.

The payment amounts and dates can be found on your Tenancy Agreement.

The payment dates for 2011/12 are as follows:

Payment Date Accommodation Period
26 October 2011 Autumn Term 2011
11 January 2012 Spring Term 2012
23 April 2012 Easter Vacation 2012 / Summer Term 2012
31 May 2012 Summer Vacation 2012 (postgraduates / researchers only)

How much is the first instalment of accommodation fees?

If your contract runs from 18 September 2011 then the first accommodation fee payable is:

  • £1706.25 if you are in Mill Hall en suite accommodation.
  • £1736.70 if you are in any other ensuite accommodation.
  • £1362.90 if you are in standard accommodation.
  • £2610.30 if you are in a studio flat.

Why aren't the instalments equal?

In 2003/04 accommodation fees were divided into three equal instalments (four for postgraduates) but following feedback from students the decision was made to revert back to termly instalments, so that each payment covers a specific and easily identified period of time.

Does the £250 accommodation deposit come off my accommodation fees?

Yes - the £250 accommodation deposit for session 2011/12 is returned and allocated against your final instalment of accommodation fees, subject to all University charges being cleared.

After your first year

What are my accommodation options in my 2nd, 3rd and 4th year?

Returning students and final year students can find further information on the returning students' accommodation Intranet pages

Can I continue to live on campus during the Summer?

Students will be given the opportunity to continue residing on campus during the Summer Vacation subject to our terms and conditions, including clearance of outstanding University-related charges. Applications are available on-line from March/April of each session. Availability of campus accommodation may vary in 2012 compared to other years due to the London Olympics. It may not be possible to accommodation the usual number of students due to Brunel's commitment to provide rooms to LOCOG for those taking part in the Olympics or providing support to LOCOG. An update will be provided at a later date on the Accommodation Office website.

Not all students will be able to continue living in the same room, however we will ensure that you are allocated another room on campus. Availability of some types of rooms over the summer period is limited.
