Changing Browser Settings (Internet Explorer)
Changing Font Size
- From the menu bar select View
- Point to Text Size
- Select the Text Size that best meets your needs
- Alternatively, if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, hold down the Ctrl button on the keyboard and at the same time, scroll up to make the text smaller, or down to increase the text size
Changing Background Colour
- From the menu bar select Tools and Internet Options
- Select Colours
- Click in the Use Windows Colours checkbox*
- Click OK
- Click the Accessibility panel on the Internet Options menu
- Select Ignore Colours Specified on Webpages
- Click OK to close and again to close the Internet Options menu
*This will cause the browser to display pages using the general Windows display colours. For details on how to change these settings, please click here for the BBC's My Web My Way accessibility site.
Changing Browser Settings (Mozilla Firefox)
Changing Background or Text Colour
- From the Tools menu select Options
- Select the Content tab
- Click on the colours button in the Fonts & Colours section
- Choose a new background colour and/or text colour
- Ensure the tick-box “Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above” is NOT selected
- Click OK
Changing Text Size
- Open the View menu
- Choose Text Size and select Increase or Decrease
- Alternatively, from the keyboard use Ctrl and + to increase the text size, or Ctrl and – to decrease text size
- Alternatively, if using a mouse with a scroll wheel, hold down the Ctrl key and scroll down to increase the text size, or scroll up to decrease text size
Software to assist browsing
ReadPlease (www.readplease.com)
ReadPlease is a free to download program that will read out any text that is pasted into the ReadPlease window
Natural Voice Reader (www.naturalreaders.com/download.htm)
Provides a free Professional Version that reads text directly from the browser window
