Huge Medal Haul for Brunel Athletes At

British Universities Indoor Athletic Champions 2009
Brunel’s Olympic production line began at the London Games of 1948 with Les Lewis in the 4 x 400m relay and most recently saw Montell Douglas, Laura Turner (both 100m and 4 x 100m relay), Emma Ania (4 x 100m relay), Kelly Sotherton and Julie Hollman (both heptathlon) represent Team GB in Beijing. In between those Games the University has produced a steady stream of Olympians and British Record breakers including Alan Pascoe, Kathy Smallwood-Cook, Brian Hooper, and Iwan Thomas. Brunel University's Athletics Performance Programme (APP) and Sports Scholarship Awards are comprehensive support packages for student athletes. Both programmes are now well established and are bearing fruit as shown by the recent victories in the BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships. The current crop of talent aiming for London 2012 includes UK 400m hurdles champion Perri Shakes-Drayton, UK Indoor bronze medallists Tara Bird (800m) and Rion Pierre (200m), European indoor relay silver medallist Nick Leavey and World Junior 1500m bronze medallist Emma Pallant.
