Automated Birdsong Recognition

Stephen Marsland (Massey University, New Zealand)

Abstract

Recognising birds from their calls is extremely useful for conservation ecology, since birds are often far easier to hear than see. In this talk I will describe some of the challenges in the quest to automate this, which combines signal processing, machine learning, and applied mathematics. I will also introduce some New Zealand birds along the way as example species.
