Honorary doctorate for music education pioneer Gillian Moore

The degree was awarded at Cadogan Hall, in London, during a special evening of contemporary and classical music to celebrate the bicentenary of the university's namesake, the Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and the university's 40th anniversary.

Ms Moore was until recently, the artistic director of the London Sinfonietta and played a key role in the Royal Festival Hall's audience development programme, Inside Music.

She pioneered the role of orchestras in education by setting up the London Sinfonietta's now internationally renowned education programme, bringing contemporary music into schools, prisons, and the community.

Giving the citation, Brunel's Pro Vice Chancellor Linda Thomas, said Gillian Moore had “put the South Bank on the hoodie 'cool' guide to UK music venues.“
