Student wins first BPMA Design Innovation Award

Ghana

First year Product Design student Andrea Pisa has won the first British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA) Design Innovation Award for her innovative solution to protecting your personal belongings from thieves while you’re out of the house.

Andrea designed an easy to use lock that requires two hands to open it, thus deterring most pickpockets. Inexpensive and with plenty of branding space, the concept can be tailored to protect business computer bags, backpacks and shoulder bags, and is perfect for commuters. The bright idea won Andrea the top prize of £1,000.

“Winning the competition was definitely an honour but most of all it was encouraging to me in the early stages of my design career”, said Andrea. “It was a great opportunity to gain insight into working life. I decided to concentrate on the issue of pickpocketing as this is a common problem which is often pointed out but rarely solved.”
