As former Prime Minister Gordon Brown steps into the Brexit debate, Dr Dimitrios Giannoulopoulos says it is a welcome change to hear talk of the UK leading in Europe.

For too long now, he says, the campaign has focused on frightening the public into making a decision that could affect Britain's future.

In an article written for The Conversation, Dr Giannoulopoulos adds: "Brown’s call for action is a useful reminder that this should be a debate about the UK’s standing in Europe and the world. It is ultimately a stark choice between isolationism and continuing to be a strong international player."

The rhetoric Mr Brown uses, Dr Giannoulopoulos says, may not have come too late for voters to be able to make an informed decision on the EU referendum - even to be persuaded about the benefits of staying in.
