The Union of Brunel Students has been named a Gold Standard Students' Union in a national accreditation scheme celebrating Olympic related student activities.

The Be a Champion scheme, run by the National Union of Students, HEFCE and Podium alongside supporting partner Coca-Cola, recognises the commitment and effort shown by students’ unions in creating an environment for Games-inspired activity to flourish and helping students be part of London 2012. Only 14 Unions in the country received the Gold award.

Vice-President (Student Activities) Gary O’ Brien said: “We are delighted that our hard work and enthusiasm has been recognised by this national scheme. I have been committed to building a positive Olympic focused environment on campus from the beginning of my first term of office in 2011. Through events such as the visit of the Olympic torch tour bus and a multitude of student-led activities in the final weeks of the summer term, I’ve been inspired by the level of involvement and engagement of our students at Brunel. We have also engaged with the local community, and seeing the impact of our activity on our neighbours is fantastic - for me, it's what the Games are all about.”

Fiona Ellison, 2012 Programme Manager at the National Union of Students, added: “Be a Champion Gold accreditation status recognises the very best students’ unions and Brunel is certainly part of this group. The leadership that the Gary and all of the team have shown has been fantastic and their achievements to date – as well as future plans – have fully embraced the inspiration of the Games and showcased the variety of ways that students can be involved."
