Brunel has won a grant to hold two joint workshops on resilient structures and infrastructure and petroleum wastewater with Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan.

Held under the Newton-Al-Farabi Partnership Programme, a new bilateral UK-Kazakhstan programme that forms part of the UK’s Newton Fund, the workshops will take place on March 14-17 in Astana. Brunel is one of the first group of institutions to win such funding.

The infrastructure workshop will present current state-of-the-art for the understanding, design and development of civil engineering structures to withstand extreme hazards. While the other will concentrate on wastewater treatment, environmental impact assessment and sustainable water resources management in the oil and gas industry.

Both aim to bring leading, established and early-career researchers from the UK and Kazakhstan together in order to explore important ideas and to plant the seeds of interdisciplinary collaborations.

They will include input from practicing engineers, planners and policy-makers. The events will help to highlight multidisciplinary aspects of engineering research and will provide an opportunity for networking.
