Ms Mayumi Oyagi
HP Lecturer - PDC - Modern Languages

Summary

Mayumi is a native speaker of Japanese from Aizu in Fukushima prefecture of Tohoku region, about 200miles north of Tokyo in Honshu, Japan’s main island.

Mayumi is a qualified teacher and has taught in adult education in the UK as well as the British Airport Authority, while promoting the Japanese language and culture to a local secondary and primary school. She has been teaching at Brunel University London since Japanese was first added to the Modern Languages portfolio in 2009. Besides her work at Brunel, Mayumi teaches non-Japanese speaking employees in Japanese companies based in UK. She aims to make a better understanding of not only language but also business etiquette in order to improve workplace relationships.

Mayumi’s lessons are fun and enjoyable with a variety of teaching resources including games, songs and authentic cultural activities. She uses visual teaching resources in each lesson to enable learners to understand more easily. She tries to develop a learner-centred classroom, relaxed though with a constructive learning atmosphere to help learners to progress to the best of their ability. Mayumi is a patient and enthusiastic individual who enjoys teaching. She encourages and values learners’ participation in lessons. Learning a non-European language is often regarded as challenging, though Mayumi hopes her teaching style and approach towards the learner helps to dispel this myth.
