Pioneering research in basalt-reinforced composites

Why Basalt Composites?

  • Basalt has tensile strength of up to 4840 MPa, nearly 10 times that Stainless Steel (SS)
  • Basalt will have no detrimental effect and will not introduce heavy metals into the environment.
  • Basalt has excellent hardness and corrosion and wear resistance
  • Cost of Basalt fibres (£1.6/kg) are 12 times less that of Carbon fibres (£19.3/kg) and have a higher corrosion resistance.
  • Basalt has a density of ~2.6 g/cm3 similar to liquid Al (~2.4 g/cm3), thereby limiting segregation effects.
