Qualifications:  BEng (Hons), MSc, PhD

Dr Miltiadis Kourmpetis graduated with a BEng (Hons) degree from Brunel University (UK) in Mechanical Engineering. He holds an MSc and a PhD from Imperial College (UK) specialising in fracture mechanics, creep in metals, FEA and developed a strain monitoring system for steam power plants under the sponsorship of E.ON UK.

His work in BIC predominately focuses on high temperature sensors for condition monitoring, sensor design and application tools for remote operation and harsh environments and condition monitoring.

Projects he has been involved in within BIC are as follows;

 An innovative vibration technology and low cost automatic near real time system for inspecting the integrity of piles sponsored by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

  • A vortex robot that will autonomously navigate the vertical surfaces of large concrete structures, the work funded by FP7.
  • A bespoke solution, non‐intrusive, acoustic‐analysis Condition Monitoring system, which utilises an acoustic sensor array to detect faults in drivetrain components of wind turbines at an early stage, funded by H2020.
  • A solution for coated and buried pipework with high attenuation to guided ultrasonic waves, funding by Innovate UK.
  • An on line and global structural health monitoring system for high temperature steam lines using guided waves specially designed sensors.

He has published more than 20 papers in international refereed journals and conferences with over 100 citations on fracture mechanics, FEA, design of strain sensors, creep and condition monitoring in high temperature applications.

Prior to joining BIC he spent 7 years in the oil and gas industry as a Senior Engineer and Consultant working in projects around the globe related to the execution phase of programs ensuring they are completed within time, specification and budget.
