Masculinity and De-Industrialisation in the South African lowveld
Brunel University London
My next book project is entitled A Man is an Axe: Masculinity and De-Industrialisation in the South African lowveld. The study examines the impact of industrial decentralisation – particularly the closure of gold and coal mine on the gendered experiences of men in rural South Africa. The study explores the themes of generation, domesticity, sex, violence and crime in the lives of individual men.
Relates to this, I am currently conducting research on the operation of four different anti-crime squads in the Bushbuckridge area of South Africa, exploring the different politics of these groupings, the social construction of evil, and also the legitimacy of violence. In particular I seek to compare the similarities and differences between action against criminals and earlier actions against witches.
