BIAS at Hillingdon Older People's Assembly

BIAS was present at the quarterly Hillingdon Older People’s Assembly at Hillingdon Civic Centre to promote the institute and recruit older people for a pilot study being conducted by Mary Pat Sullivan and Christina Victor, we also recruited for the Brunel Older People’s Reference Group.
Meeting the Challenge, TACT 3 Conference

Eleanor van den Heuvel from BIB hosted a free 1 day training event to showcase her BIAS research in to continence management tools for older people. The event was well attended by healthcare professionals and Brunel Older People’s Reference Group. Speakers from other collaborating universities were involved including a video conference with Canada.
Emerging Researchers in Ageing Workshop
26th of April 2012
Dr Deborah Cairns will be hosting a workshop in conjunction with the British Society of Gerontology to showcase emerging researchers and research in the field of gerontology. This event will run from 9.30am to 3.30pm in Mary Seacole 202 and is open to Masters, PhD and Post Doctoral Researchers.

Beginging on the 21st of March with a talk given by Professor Christina Victor, BIAS will be running a series of seminars from its directors:
21st March: Professor Christina Victor: Ageing in a Foreign Land: The Experience of Older Migrants in the UK.
11th April: Dr Ian Kill: The Cell Biology of Human Ageing.
16th May: Ms Farnaz Nickpour: Innovative Ageing: A 'Design' Perspective.
All talks will take place in the Darwin rooms in the Hamilton Centre and all are welcome to attend.
World Social Work Day Workshop
March 20th 2012
On the 20th of March Dr Mary Pat Sullivan will be hosting a workshop with Gary Fitzgerald MA, Cheif Executive of Action on Elder Abuse. Gary will give a short talk and light refreshments followed by a discussion of the topics will follow. The event will take place in the Cavendish room in the Hamilton Centre and will run from 4pm to 6pm.
The 2nd Annual BIAS Conference
15 February 2012
In mid February BIAS held its 2nd annual conference. We were pleased to welcome Professor Nick Tyler from University College London and the Director of the Crucible Centre for ageing research as our key note speaker. Professor Tyler gave a talk entitled "Accessing Accessability: What Are We Really Aiming For?"
There was also a variety of ageing related research on display from BIAS members, as well as an Annual General Meeting in the afternoon.
Addressing the Gap between Research Evidence and Best Practice Workshop

Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies was delighted to welcome Dr. Lynn McDonald, Director, National Initiative on Care of the Elderly (NICE), University of Toronto, to Brunel University to present and discuss recent federally supported initiatives in Canada to address the gap between research evidence on the care of older people and what is actually happening in health and social care practice. Professor McDonald shared her experience developing NICE, its structure and core activities, and lessons learned in promoting knowledge transfer and exchange. The workshop provided BIAS members an opportunity for networking and future collaboration.

Engaging Older People in Research

The Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies, Brunel University and Tilda Goldberg Centre, University of Bedfordshire co-hosted a workshop on ‘Engaging Older People in Research’ for early to mid career researchers. The community of researchers interested in ageing and later life is continuing grow, and their experience in developing innovative research methods and strategies to engage older people in their work is also expanding. The purpose of the workshop was to explore the development of older user participation in research and different levels for their involvement; to review recruitment and retention strategies used by ageing researchers; and to present ‘practice from the field’ from some of the UK’s leading researchers.
Some of the topics that were covered include: ethical issues in research with vulnerable people, empowerment, risk and responsibilities, engaging with different cultures, talking about sensitive topics, practical suggestions for engagement, and factors to consider when engaging people with dementia.


Detecting and Preventing Financial Abuse of Older Adults: An examination of decision making by managers and professionals in health, social care and banking

The Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies hosted the New Dynamics of Ageing conference on Decision Making in Detecting and Preventing Financial Abuse of Older Adults. Guest speakers include Mr Gary Fitzgerald, Chief Executive of Action on Elder Abuse and Prof Katherine Pearson from Pennsylvania State University.
The day featured talks by the research teams on their research findings and discussions with participants on the benefits of the findings, how to implement it and how best to carry the research forward. The conference provided an opportunity for networking among those with an interest in policy and evidence based practice in relation to elder abuse generally.
Progeria (Hutchinson- Guildford Progeria Syndrome) Research Day

The Brunel Institute of Ageing Studies hosted the Progeria Research Day, the first UK meeting dedicated to progeria research, at Brunel University. The event brought together representatives of all the major groups in the UK with interests in progeria research. The largest research group on Progeria now resides within Biosciences at Brunel University.

World Social Work Day

On 25 March the Brunel Institute of Aging Studies celebrated social work with older people by hosting a seminar entitled “Are all old people lonely and what can we do to make them happy?” and a reception. The seminar explored how common loneliness is amongst older people; what are the key factors that render older people vulnerable to loneliness and opportunities for social intervention to minimise the impact of loneliness in daily life.
