New Route PhD - Biosciences
Biosciences, within the School of Health Sciences and Social Care have an international reputation for research in cellular, sub-cellular and genetic areas and are the home of the renowned Institute of Cancer Genetics and Pharmacogenomics, which has been one of the chief contributors to national breakthroughs in skin, breast and prostate cancers. Other important research areas are covered by the cell and chromosome biology group and in the exciting field of bioinformatics - the use of computer-based technology to address biological questions. This research expertise feeds specialist knowledge and an enthusiasm for discovery into teaching at every level.
The School of Health Sciences and Social Care, has excellent modern research facilities including laboratories for human molecular genetics, and suites for human cell culture, human gene mapping and DNA sequencing, and fluorescent microscopy and 3D image analysis. This programme aims to educate graduates not only to the high academic standards expected from PhD research but also in generic personal, business and communication skills. Because it extends the usual PhD from three to four years, it develops an integrated range of skills and knowledge that both broaden and deepen the individual's subject expertise beyond the bounds of the usual research degree.
Applications are invited from candidates with an interest in the areas of Medical Genetics, Human Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Chromosome Biology or Cancer Genetics.
