New Route PhD - Mathematical Sciences
The Department of Mathematical Sciences has an exciting research agenda and an established international reputation. Its major areas of research are:
- Combinatorics
- Continuum Mechanics
- Computational Mathematics
- Mathematical Physics
- Non Linear Systems
- Operational Research and Risk Modelling
- Statistics
Apart from continuing to develop these well-established areas of excellence, the staff have always kept abreast of new areas of research in which mathematics plays an important role. These have included modern topics in the biological and material sciences, economics and finance.
Recent areas of application include the pattern formation in biological systems, the design of road traffic noise barriers, the computational modelling of advanced polymer structures, strategic and tactical planning of supply chains and portfolio optimisation.
The Department is also home to three research centres. The Brunel Institute of Computational Mathematics (BICOM) is an autonomous research institute specialising in the theory and application of finite element methods. The Centre for the Analysis of Risk and Optimisation Modelling Applications (CARISMA), an interdisciplinary research centre that is supported by the University's Strategic Research Initiative. The scientific objective of the Brunel University Random Systems Research Centre (BURSt), is to investigate and develop the theory of random systems.
Research projects in Mathematics have attracted funding of over £2.5 million from bodies such as EPSRC, DTI, European Union, Ministry of Defence, Ford Motor Co, Daimler-Benz, Unilever Research, Fidelity Investments, UBS Warburg, Advanced Portfolio Technology, and MB Risk Management.
