About the School

About the School

The Brunel School of Engineering and Design is one of the largest and most successful Engineering and Design Schools in the UK. Guided by the pioneering spirit of the University’s namesake, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, our vision is to be an innovative provider of educational and research programmes that lead to advances in knowledge and skills for sustainable technological development and wealth creation.

Undergraduate teaching

The School has a strong and enviable reputation for its teaching and the employability of its graduates. This has been gained over many years from our strong and extensive links with industry and the professions which inform the relevance and direction of our academic programmes and research. Sandwich programmes and industrial placements as well as project based learning are at the heart of our undergraduate provision. This is supported by excellent and extensive laboratory and computing facilities, highly qualified academic staff with international reputations in their fields and very dedicated support staff.

Close to 50% of our students follow sandwich programmes that involve placements with many large and medium size organisations which include: Intel, BMW, Red Bull F1, McLaren Automotive, Mercedes High Performance Engines, Goldman Sachs, GE Aviation, Research in Motion, BAE Systems, amongst many others. Sandwich placements not only improve the employability of our graduates but also lead to higher graduate salaries and career prospects. The School believes very strongly in the value of placements and has ambitious plans to increase the number of students on placement even further. To achieve this we work hard to increase the skills, opportunities and success of our students in competitive market.

Postgraduate taught programmes

Alongside our high quality undergraduate programmes we also offer a broad range of postgraduate taught (MSc) programmes in many areas of engineering and design and in a variety of delivery modes: full-time, part-time and distance-learning, to suit the needs of our students and their career aspirations. We perhaps have the highest postgraduate taught student population of any UK university.

The School is research intensive and has an international reputation for  fundamental and applied research in many areas of: electronic and computer engineering; mechanical and aerospace engineering; design; advanced manufacturing engineering and management and civil and built environment engineering. Building on our excellent performance in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) we have achieved excellent results in the 2008 RAE. Half of our academics were ranked as internationally excellent and 95% achieved international standard. Staff continue to enhance their reputation by the size and breadth of research grants which include the co-ordination of, and participation in, multi-million and multi-group UK and European Union programmes. The volume and diversity of our work also enables us to provide a wide range of collaboration opportunities with industry and challenging research experiences for our research students.

The School features highly in all the UK league tables for the quality of our teaching and research, student experience and the employability of our graduates. We look forward to welcoming you to the School of Engineering and Design where we offer a challenging and rewarding academic experience as well as fundamental understanding and solutions to industry problems and needs.
