Part-time Student Profiles
Raymond Griffin
My name is Raymond Griffin, a first year part-time student on the MSc course Engineering Design. I am currently employed as a project engineer within the food manufacturing industry. This role combines elements of design, project planning and finance. The reason for joining this MSc course at Brunel is to enhance my current skills and knowledge and consolidate my position within my organisation.
The role of an engineer is to bring together a number of different disciplines and theories to create and evolve working systems. This course combines six advanced engineering modules in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Controls, Manufacturing and Human Factors with six CAE software packages to create a fully integrated approach to engineering design from the conception of an idea to working application. The importance of a structured approach to engineering design and application is stressed during the group project module Design Experience. This module involves utilising the course modules and CAE software to undertake a project within industry. The project focuses on the need to communicate ideas equally to fellow engineers and non-engineering personnel alike, as well as working within a team to produce the final design concept.
Having been out of higher education for a number of years the learning curve was steep, but with the guidance from Dr Siva Sivaloganathan, the Course Director, acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to reach the level of theory required to undertake the course was relatively easy. The course brings together students from around the world and from a number of different engineering backgrounds.
For practising engineers from different disciplines who are well motivated, focused and have a quest to progress their knowledge, understanding and further development this is an excellent course. It provides the rigor of theory and links it with applications. I strongly recommend the part-time route of this course to practising engineers
who wish to fly higher.
Brunel University offers excellent academic teaching skills and links with industry, to provide the next generation of design engineers and managers to meet the challenges ahead. I hope to retain my links with the engineering design facility at Brunel even after I have completed the course to help in this progression.
