- The Guardian University Guide 2013 - 2nd in ‘Art & Design’
- The Complete University Guide - 5th in ‘Art & Design’
- The Sunday Times University Guide 2013 – 3rd in ‘Art & Design’
- The Times Good University Guide – 6th in ‘Art & Design’
Excellent student satisfaction: Design students are the second most satisfied students in the UK in “Design Studies”, according to the 2012 National Student Survey.
High employability: Design graduates enjoy excellent career prospects – see student graduate articles - 84% find employment within the first 6 months of leaving University – see Unistats [http://www.unistats.ac.uk]
Links with leading employers: Over 75% of our students have a placement year in industry with leading companies and consultancies.
At Brunel, your learning experience will be created on a broad base of knowledge, skills and industrial experience, distinguishing you from other design graduates. To enable this, we will provide you with tuition from an extensive cross disciplinary lecturing team including mechanical and electrical engineers, computer and materials scientists, mathematicians, psychologists, practising designers, and graphic artists. Along with the knowledge and expertise accumulated throughout the courses, you could participate in our exchange programmes or undertake work placements with some of the best companies in the world.
Postgraduate Courses
Our international, multidisciplinary postgraduate programmes will help you take design thinking further in your own direction, as well as connect you with industry and other disciplines through collaborations between research groups and courses. Thus, your learning experience will be directed by your own needs or interests. This unique learning path will prepare you for continuing your professional development and place you at the forefront of design research. To deliver all this, we offer an international cross-disciplinary lecturing team with a great support from experts and professionals in the industry.
Research Courses
Design at Brunel is a multidisciplinary and increasingly interdisciplinary activity, driven by human need, and our research approach seeks to integrate the human and the technological - combining human centred design investigation with the technological or systems dimension enabled by design thinking and processes. The distinctiveness of the subject area of Design (‘Brunel Design’) lies in its integrated and engineering approach to design: On account of its taught programmes, Brunel Design is a multi-disciplinary department, a spectrum of disciplines that spans electrical, mechanical, manufacturing and materials engineering and CAD, to inclusive and sustainable design, and design management. Brunel Design has a well established record of research excellence, with multidisciplinary, product related design research that is grounded on strong engineering design traditions.
Research in Design is coordinated under the Brunel Design Research Centre. The thematic streams within the Centre are aligned with current environmental, societal and technological imperatives:
- Design and human wellbeing (through human centred design and inclusive design including ergonomics)
- Design and urban & environmental sustainability (including behaviour change; electronic materials, textiles, spatial design, virtual/VR space, transport)
- Design for the creative industries (including computer aided design; human modelling & simulation; open design & the digital economy; materials & manufacturing design; design policy & management)
You can find supervision from individual academic staff, research groups, or University Institutes in any of these research areas.
