Summary
Paul Turnock is Programme Director for the BSc undergraduate Product Design and Product Design Engineering courses within Brunel Design, School of Engineering and Design. He is the architect of the now world renowned Design cornerstone of the School, building a rigorous design culture, now fully integrated within a School where engineering and design work in a symbiotic relationship. He joined the team in 1990, continuing his design management consulting work in parallel with developing Design within Brunel University. Paul teaches and is consultant to companies in Singapore and Hong Kong and has accumulated new product development experience with over 100 companies worldwide.
Paul has a design career spanning over thirty years; working as an in-house designer, new product development specialist, design consultant and design educationalist. Studying Industrial Design Engineering at Central School and Art and Design, then Design Research/Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art, Paul has a broad experience working with blue chip companies and as an external design consultant. He built his experience as a designer, design manager and NPD specialist within Crisp & Wilson Product Development Consultants, Roberts Weaver Design, Conran Design Group, RSCG Conran Design and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Projects undertaken within Europe and Pacific Rim include design implementation strategies, new product development embodiment and the realisation of new products for manufacturing and service organisations.
Paul is the creator and driving force behind ‘Made in Brunel’, a brand embodying the very best of innovative thinking.
Research and Teaching
Research Interests
Paul’s research field of study is design pedagogy; defining the process of creating, developing and realising manufactured products in an industrial context. The crystal clear communication of design methodologies to both industrialists and educationalists forms the backbone to his research and it is the communication of design that forms the core of his academic experience. He has run collaborative projects with Bentley Motors, BBC Worldwide, The Boeing Company, British Airways, Fisher Price Toys, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, IMI Vision, LEGO, Marks & Spencer, P&G Gillette, Royal National Institute for Deaf People, SAB Miller, TomTom and UCB CelltechTeaching
Paul is Module Leader, DM2316 Design Process Two, Module Leader, DM3306 Major Project and Module Co-tutor with Stephen Green, DM3310, Contextual Design. He is Level 3 Tutor and Programme Director for BSc Product Design, and BSc Product Design Engineering. He is also responsible for UCAS presentations through the academic year.
