Summary
Steven is Programme Director for the MSc Integrated Product Design, a Designplus Leader and the admissions tutor for Brunel Design.
Throughout his 25 year professional career in design and branding Stephen has combined work in the design consultancy business with roles in higher education. A notable early professional project included being part of the team designing and obtaining worldwide patents for the World’s first large scale production of injection moulded suitcases for Samsonite which have subsequently sold in millions. His design consultancy experience covers work in a diverse range of industry sectors and applications for 3D design and branding resulting in a number of award winning design projects: The British Design Award in 1993 for computer proliferals, a Designers and Art Directors Silver award in 1998 for a range of Suitcases and a Business Week award in 2002. More recently Stephen was a Client Director at Fitch, part of the WPP group and one of the largest global design consultancies. Clients here included TfL, Diagio, Westminster City Council, Liverpool City Council and West London Business.
Experience in Higher Education includes 6 years leading the 3D design courses at the highly respected Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. Stephen has instigated many projects with external organisations including work with the BBC, Nokia, Mitsubishi, Kodak, the Tate Modern and Marks and Spencer.
Stephen joined Brunel in 2004 and through his work with Designplus has continued building the subject area’s excellent links with industry. These industry links enhance the work in all undergraduate and postgraduate design courses and are represented in the annual MADE IN BRUNEL activities and book which Stephen also plays a significant role in mentoring.
Brief biography
Stephen has a First class BA with distinction in Product Design from Kingston University and a PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from Brunel University. 25 years experience working in Design Consultancy have included positions as a Director at Fitch London and ASA designers. In higher education Stephen was Head of 3D design at Ravensbourne College and has been an external examiner at Birmingham City University. He has led Designplus at Brunel since 2004 and he represents Brunel University in the British Design Innovation University and Design Industry Partnership.

Designplus is a design based Knowledge Exchange network based at Brunel but encompassing the Westfocus universities. It develops and co-ordinates projects events and professional development

Predicting Design Impact
A doctorial thesis exploring frameworks and modelling of impact in professional design activities. This work is planned to generate a series of research papers, and involves collaborating with the Design Business Association using their archive of Design effectiveness Award design project data.
