Brunel hosts power engineering conference

Brunel Institute of Power Systems (BIPS) in the School of Engineering and Design hosted the 47th International Universities’ Power Engineering Conference (UPEC 2012) in London from 4-7 September. UPEC is a long established conference, which is very popular with young researchers, PhD students and engineers from the power industry. The conference allowed participants to exchange experiences and discuss the most up-to-date topics in power engineering and provided delegates with important insights into the newest projects, developments and research that are driving the move towards competitive, sustainable and secure energy throughout Europe. A total of 220 delegates were in attendance from 30 countries including the UK and 204 papers were presented.

Brunel leads UK-China energy research collaboration

As reported in Brunel Leading Edge starting in March 2013, Brunel will lead a £690k multidisciplinary collaborative research project with institutions from both the UK and China.

PhD studentship: Modelling and Optimisation of large dynamic network

Applications are invited for a PhD research studentship in the field of data prediction and analysis in the School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University. The post is funded for 3 years in partnership with an industrial company. The aim of the project is to develop scalable optimisation algorithms that can handle the accumulated analysis of supply chain particularly capture the dynamics of the large network. The work scope will cover data analysis, network modelling and optimisation, software development for simulation and automation of scalable network modelling process. The scholarship is partially funded by industry and, as such, it will require regular deliverables to be completed under strict deadlines to industrial partner. The deliverables may include software developments, reports and presentations.

ECE has once again excelled in the NSS survey 2012

HEFCE has adopted a new programme-based strategy for presenting stats on the quality of taught provision in UK HEI's using Key Information Sets (KIS). What has characterised the ECE NSS performance in previous years is the consistency and upward trend of the annual NSS returns and this year has been no exception. The overall satisfaction rate of our EE students was 92% (94% on just the BEng EE programme) for an overall satisfaction mean score of 4.5 - This is compared to 90% and 4.4 respectively last year (2011) which were then record figures for us. Improvements were made across the board particularly in assessment and feedback but also in teaching quality and academic support. The core BEng programme we deliver in Electrical and Electronic Engineering was ranked 8th among its peers in the country, just level on overall satisfaction with Sheffield and Edinburgh, two top UK universities in the EE educational provision.

ECE is a unique  subject area in the university in a 5-year NSS cycle that has managed to maintain a consistently improving NSS performance with no fluctuations or stagnancy and this is what makes our NSS performance quite distinguishable and noteworthy. This comes as a remarkable reward to all the efforts ECE has been putting in to ensure the quality of its teaching and its students' learning experience, and truly a recompense to the collective departmental work in supporting students and promoting the taught provision business.
