Many modern power systems have long transmission distances and remote sources of generation. Such systems have high series impedance which reduces the system stability. Conventional stabilisers for fixed structure and constant parameters are tuned for one operating point and can give optimal performance for that condition. As the characteristics of power system elements are non-linear, conventional stabilisers are not capable of providing optimal performance for all operating conditions. The aim of this project is to design an intelligent Power System Stabilisers (PSS) that are primarily used to damp the low frequency oscillations in power systems.
