Geographic information system (GIS) has created new opportunities for modelling real life phenomena including development planning. GIS for instance, has provided various capabilities for input, management, analysis and display of spatially referenced data. It provides a frame work for integrating spatial and non-spatial temporal data from different formats, sources. More importantly GIS based software provides special capabilities for spatial analysis. With these special capabilities, it is relatively easier to generate and incorporate various spatial variables in various fields including region and urban land use modelling.
The aim of this research is to analyze sub-region and urban planning procedures, spatial data requirements and to develop an urban planning land use model with spatial reference to the Tripoli region of Libya. There have been very few attempts to develop land use development models that suits the specificities of the country's regions.
