PhD Research title: Hybrid Delivery System for Goods (HDS): A System Model for Delivery Alternatives in Jordan

In the last few years, online shopping in Jordan has become increasingly popular because of the financial and convenience gains it can bring to retailers, customers and delivery companies. However, the growth of the online shopping activities is hindered by the lack of post code system - which makes home delivery inefficient and in some cases impossible as home locations are difficult to find.

This project aims to improve the process of goods delivery in Jordan by designing a system model to enable the delivery of goods to alternative destination in the proximity of home. For example, instead of delivering to homes, deliveries are to be made to nearby petrol stations, post offices, bus stations and other delivery addresses - which can be easily found both by delivery companies and delivery recipients.

The system model integrates the delivery alternatives such as attended (e.g. collection points) and unattended (e.g. shared delivery boxes, private delivery boxes, etc.) in order to solve the "last mile" issue of not being able to identify the home address and/or the recipient not being at home. Additionally, the system is advantageous because it reduces the cost of delivery operation by not using ‘time windows’ and thus eliminating time constraints.
