PhD Research:

Fingerprint biometrics sensors are extensively used for various applications and existing sensors have some limitations in acquiring very reliable latent images of the ridges and valleys. In the past twenty years, numerous technologies have been introduced in fingerprint sensors such as optical, pressure, capacitive, thermal, acoustic and radiofrequency. The performance of many existing fingerprint sensors is subject to spoofing (fake and dummy), and identification and authentication is limited to 85%. Various improvements to the existing technologies are still taking place such as size, cost, physical state and resolution; however, ‘liveness’ is still a common issue with these technologies.

The main aims of this research are:

  • Development of a novel nanotechnology based fingerprint sensing technique based on electrical detection method
  • Detect the liveness from finger tip placed on fingerprint sensor
  • Alleviate anti-spoofing attack on fingerprint sensor
  • Improve the False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR)
