Phd Research Title: Hardware implementation of multiview video compression schemes
This project would look into novel methods for the hardware acceleration of algorithms aiming at compressing multiview video signals which are inherently complex in structure. We are currently working on the compression of these signals but the simulation is proving to be time and resource consuming. This project would look into new ways of using hardware acceleration to make the h/w implementation of multiview video compression possible with real-time or near real-time performance. Therefore, the project would first look into optimisation techniques that would reduce the processing requirements of key compression components without leaving any negative impact on the performance and/or quality of compression. Then, research would look into putting the optimised techniques on FPGA/DSP hardware and then evaluate their performance both in terms of complexity/time and the perceptual quality of reconstructed multiview video. Further optimisation would then be performed to obtain maximally optimal results. Subjective and objective evaluation methods would be adopted throughout the research work.
