PhD Research:  Dynamic wavelength allocation in optical fiber network

To investigate optical tree networks using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. WDM technology is to transmit number of wavelengths in a single optical fiber. Wavelength assignment is the topology to choose the fitted wavelength to carry information from the source to the destinations. There are different types of wavelength allocation and the work in this research is to investigate dynamic wavelength assignment (DWA).

The centralized and distributed scenarios have been examined in this research using multicast algorithm to multicast information to different destinations. The researcher considers also the wavelength switching using the adequate wavelength converters (WC) and light splitters (LS) to broadcast data.

The wavelength routing and assignment are NP-complete and this problem has to be solved by using routing or assignment algorithm to send data to destinations. The blocking probability, network capacity and time delay is the most challenges in this area of research as shown in fig. 1. Using different algorithms are to solve different problems. The purpose of this work to increase number of calls in an optical network and decrease the cost, blocking probability, group delay, conversion range and wavelength dispersion.

Other achievement is to optimize a wavelength multicast switch to minimize number of converters, conversion range and number of splitters fig. 2.
