Research and Teaching

Research Interests

Main current research activities and interests are in experimental and computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer of both fundamental and applied nature. The experimental research aims at achieving a better understanding of the physics of flow phenomena and also to obtain data for comparison with theory. Computational Fluid Dynamics absorbs a significant portion of the research activity. Various studies in this area are concerned with the application of CFD codes and validation of existing turbulence models and numerical schemes, and also to obtain a better understanding of practical fluid flows. The main areas are:

  • Fundamental studies of turbulent shear layers including experimental studies of turbulent boundary layers on curved surfaces, free shear layers subjected to streamline curvature and pressure gradient, and coherent structures.
  • Internal flows, in particular flows in bends, valves and engineering equipment.
  • Building aerodynamics and heat transfer, mixed and free convection, air flows between zones of buildings, in stairwells, through openings and cracks, around buildings and single-side ventilation.
  • Environmental flows such as dispersion of plumes into atmosphere and associated chemical reactions.
  • Biomedical applications including arterial blood flow and flow through pumps and other devices aim at improving design and performance.
