Robustness of Complex Networks

Student: Mr Emil Gegov

Supervisors: Dr Mark Atherton, Professor Fernand Gobet (Psychology)

The aim of his research is to investigate existing and to develop new robustness mechanisms in complex networks. The four main mechanisms identified so far are network structure, redundancy, distributed functionality and self-organisation. The initial stages of this work focused mainly on network structure by exploring the robustness of the Internet (at the autonomous system level) to cluster damage, i.e. simulating the breakdown of entire sub-networks. This has progressed onto consideration of spatial community structure within the US airport network and linguistic word co-occurrence networks.
