Borough Road College 1817

Borough Road College (BRC) is one of Brunel University London’s predecessor institutions. It became part of West London Institute of Higher Education in 1976, which then merged with the University in 1995.

BRC was a teacher-training college set up by the British and Foreign School Society. It initially trained both male and female students; however in 1860 a dedicated women’s college was set up at Stockwell.

We have now completed the transcription of a list of the male students who attended BRC 1810-1916, available at the bottom of this page. We will release a further year in January each year. The original document which we have transcribed was itself a late 19th C / early 20th C retrospective transcript from hand-written volumes of student registers. Therefore it contains some anomalies such as students’ names being spelt differently, students appearing on the list more than once or students who attended the college but are not listed.

The Archives also holds other information on BRC students; for example we have a large collection of student photographs, application forms and other student memorabilia. If you are interested in finding out more, please email us at archivesandrecords@brunel.ac.uk.

We are now working on the list of female students at BRC and Stockwell College. We hope to have it available as a transcript by Spring 2016.
