Biography

Lieutenant Colonel James Henry Chadwick was the son of Hiram and Alice Chadwick. He attended bible class before joining Borough Road College. He was at Borough Road College from 1899-1900 where he was successful in arts and sciences, graduating with Intermediate Arts. Upon leaving Borough Road College Chadwick taught at Higher Board School, Halifax and then won a scholarship to Cambridge. He graduated from Cambridge in 1910 with a double first. Chadwick then went on to lecture at Bristol Training College before becoming an HM Inspector of Schools. He signed up 5 weeks after the outbreak of the First World War on 1 September 1914 and initially joined the 19th (Public School) Battalion Royal Fusiliers before being commissioned into the 24th Battalion Manchester Regiment (Oldham Pals) and rose to command his battalion. He was 31 when he was hit by German shellfire whilst reconnoitring Bullecourt trench on 4 May 1917 during the Battle of Bullecourt. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
