Reveal 2009 - Exhibition Opportunity
Call to Artists - Exhibition Opportunity
Hillingdon Council and Brunel University’s Beldam Gallery present REVEAL, a project that highlights the quality of artistic practice in Hillingdon. Visual artists, performers, musicians and writers are encouraged to apply for one of two opportunities: a contemporary art exhibition at the Beldam Gallery, Brunel University in Uxbridge, or a performance and live art showcase at the Great Barn, at Manor Farm in Ruislip during July and August 2009. The project will provide exposure for the region’s artists and arts communities, revealing their work to new audiences. There will be an events and education programme to complement both projects.
This is a competitive process and all proposals will be viewed by Brunel University’s Curator and the acting Head of Arts at Hillingdon Council. Works will be selected on the basis of quality and of suitability to the venue. Artists are encouraged to be ambitious and present their work in the highest quality way possible. There is no theme for either opportunity and your application should genuinely reflect your own practice and interests.
Artists living or working in Hillingdon are invited to apply, and you will need to detail your connection with the Borough in your application.
Exhibition opportunity at the Beldam Gallery, 2 July - 21 August 2009.
This special exhibition hopes to allow audiencesan insight intoa broad range of contemporary artpractice within our region, through showcasing the work of a diverse selection of artists. Proposals for the Beldam Gallery will be accepted from collaborative artists or individuals. Submitted works may take the form of drawing, painting, video, sound, photography, craft, documentation, digital media, ceramics, installation or sculpture.
Artists will work with the university curator throughout the delivery of the project. There is no exhibition fee, however a small materials budget of up to £200 will be available for selected artists. You may need to detail in your proposal what costs you envisage incurring, and how the £200 will contribute to these costs.
To submit your proposal, please send the following information to George Mogg, University Curator, The Arts Centre, Brunel University, Kingston Lane, Uxbridge UB8 3PH.
- A statement about your practice
- A CV or other information about previous projects and experience
- An exhibition proposal detailing the work you wish to show and why · Documentation of past and current work: up to 15 images on a CD / up to 15 images hard copy/ up to 10 minutes of footage on DVD or video or up to 10 minutes of sound work on CD.
You will also need to consider the installation requirements for your work. If your work needs to be installed by you personally, you will need to explain how you will undertake this, what equipment will be needed, and any health and safety considerations necessary. You may find it useful to look at the University’s Health and Safety guidance at www.brunel.ac.uk/artscentre.
If selected, a full risk assessment will need to be carried out in consultation with the Arts Centre Resources Manager, and your work may need to be adapted in response to this.
The Gallery is unattended when open. Video, sound or digital media should be supplied on a continuous loop (the Gallery is open for 7 hours each weekday). Manual operation of equipment will be subject to Arts Centre staff availability, if the use of electronic timers and sensors for electrical equipment is a possibility, you should consider this.
If your work will require electrical equipment, please list what will be needed, and whether it will be provided by yourself or the gallery. All electrical equipment brought on site will be PAT tested in situ by the University’s contractors and there is a charge of £1.75 per item for this.
All work will need to be delivered to the Beldam Gallery at an agreed time on or before 22 June 2009, and collected by arrangement before 6pm on 26 August 2009. You will need to be able to make your own arrangements for delivery and collection of any work in the exhibition. (Work cannot be stored after the collection date.)
This project is subject to funding, should funding be withdrawn then the project will not go ahead. Proposals can only be returned if a stamped addressed envelope is provided. Please do not send original work.
Should you wish to discuss your submission or submit your proposal in an alternative format, please contact George Mogg on
george.mogg@brunel.ac.uk.
Deadline for proposals: 1 April 2009.
