Overview
At the heart of the campus on the main quad, the Graduate School building is a welcoming place for postgraduate students to come to for advice, quiet study, and to socialise.
The Graduate School is a space set aside exclusively for postgraduate students to use at any time of day or night, as it is accessible 24/7 by a proximity card.
The lower level includes the Postgraduate Common Room, a kitchen, a Quiet Study Room, a Conference Room, and internet kiosks.
Upstairs, you will find the staff offices, including the Graduate School Reception, where you can come for advice between 9am – 5pm on weekdays.
Away from the main Graduate School building, the Postgraduate Study Centre in Room 213, Bannerman Centre, is a computer room accessible only to postgraduate students.
Postgraduate students are entitled to borrow a Graduate School laptop for a one week loan, free of charge. Small storage lockers are also available for use during your time as a postgraduate student. You can also use our comb binding machine and laminator.
Places
Postgraduate Common Room
The Postgraduate Common Room contains comfortable seating, and a meeting table and chairs. This is a bright and welcoming space, where you can eat your lunch, meet friends, or undertake group work. The room is lined with network points, where you can plug in your laptop to access the University network. There is a regularly refreshed magazine rack, and also a student noticeboard in this room which you are welcome to use to display notices.
Kitchen
The kitchen contains all the equipment you need to prepare a drink, light snack or heat up your food. There is a sink, a hot / cold water cooler unit, a fridge, a toaster, microwaves and a kettle. Just outside the room is a well stocked snack machine. Students are responsible for doing their own washing up. Please respect others by leaving the room as you would wish to find it.
Quiet Study Room
The Quiet Study Room simply contains tables and chairs. The room also contains plug sockets and network points, for use with laptops. Conversation should be kept to a minimum in this room, to create a peaceful working environment.
Conference Room
The Conference Room is used for staff and student meetings, as well as many of the Master's Skills Training and Researcher Development seminars offered by the Graduate School. The room is bookable for academic purposes during office hours; to make an enquiry email graduateschool@brunel.ac.uk stating the meeting purpose, time and date. The Conference Room is equipped with a networked PC, Smart Board, speakers, DVD player, internet access and air conditioning.
Graduate School Reception
The Graduate School Reception is open between 9am – 5pm on weekdays. Staff will be happy to help you with any questions relating to postgraduate life at Brunel. If you are new to the University, please come to visit us, and take a look at the range of facilities available exclusively to postgraduate students.
Postgraduate Study Centre
The Postgraduate Study Centre, located in Room 213, Bannerman Centre, is a computer room containing 40 PC workstations, accessible by proximity card to postgraduate students only. The room offers a printer and a comfortable lounge seating area. Like the main Graduate School building, this room is accessible 24/7.
Equipment
Internet kiosks
There are five Internet kiosks and stools in the Graduate School foyer, where you can get online, check your email, and make bookings for Skills Training. These machines are designed for online activity, and do not have other software installed. If you are looking for a workstation PC, you can use the Postgraduate Study Centre, find another computer room on campus, or borrow a laptop.
Laptop loan
Laptops can be borrowed from the Graduate School free of charge for one week at a time. You can reserve a machine by emailing graduateschool@brunel.ac.uk. Collection is on Wednesdays before 12pm, and return is due no later than 4pm on the following Tuesday. Renewals are not permitted. Students must be registered for with the Connect portal before borrowing a laptop.
Storage lockers
Lockers are available in the Graduate School building, and in the Postgraduate Study Centre in the Bannerman Centre. The lockers are free of charge to use, and can be kept for the duration of your postgraduate course. To obtain a locker key, visit the Graduate School Reception. Lockers are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Comb binding machine
An electric comb binding machine is available for use in the Graduate School Resource Room, and can be used to bind documents of up to 500 pages. The machine punches a maximum of 25 pages at a time. Please bring your own materials. To use the machine, ask staff for assistance.
Laminator
A laminator is available for use in the Graduate School Reception, if you need to put a plastic coating on documents to protect them. Our machine will take sheets up to size A3. Please bring your own materials. To use the machine, ask staff for assistance.
