Information for research supervisors
The Graduate School provides training workshops for Postgraduate Research Students aligned with the scope and expectations of the UK Researcher Development Framework.
All supervisors and research students are expected to:
- Agree (within a few weeks of registration) the programme of research training that the student is to complete during their studies (see the Brunel University guidelines on supervision of research students).
- Regularly review progress in training (including formally during the annual review process).
Information on the current schedule of Graduate School workshops is available here for supervisors’ reference.
For further information on the regulations and policy for doctoral degrees, see Senate Regulation 5 and the documents published by the Sub-Committee for Postgraduate Research Degrees (SCPGRD). Supervisors interested in developing their supervisory practice are encouraged to consider the workshops available from Staff Development and supported by the Graduate School.
The Graduate School also administers a number of prizes for postgraduate researchers, including the Vice Chancellor’s travel prize to support conference attendance and prizes at an annual university-wide poster conference where research students showcase their work in an interdisciplinary environment. Further information about the prizes available and application mechanisms can be found here.
The Graduate School helps to co-ordinate Brunel’s involvement in the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES). This survey aims to gather sector-wide views on postgraduate students’ experiences of their programmes and at Brunel the results feed into enhancement activities.
The Graduate School also administers the training element of the NewRoute PhD which is delivered in partnership with a number of academic schools.
