Working with the Graduate School

Opportunities to support the work of the Graduate School

We are keen to encourage colleagues to work with us to support the development of our postgraduate students and researchers. Perhaps you already offer a training session for research students in your own school that might benefit others outside of your discipline? Perhaps you are an expert in a research method or analysis technique that has applicability outside of your own discipline? If so, we’d love to talk to you about whether you could offer a session within our training programme. Working with the Graduate School is a highly tangible way to demonstrate your collegiality (now a major promotion criterion at Brunel) and helps us to enrich the experience we are able to provide our researchers. Our work with academic schools and service departments

The Graduate School works closely and effectively with a number of partners across the university and we are always happy to discuss further possibilities for collaborative provision.

We work closely with academic schools and with Marketing to deliver the successful Postgraduate Open Day programme and to ensure that Brunel is represented at external postgraduate fairs.

We integrate workshop sessions from a number of service areas (e.g. counselling, placements and careers, ASK) into our programme, providing postgraduate students with a one-stop-shop for booking their training. We also deliver training under the banner of other departments (e.g. staff development) when appropriate.

The Graduate School Board includes representation from all academic schools and has a remit that includes reviewing and advising on progress towards the University’s strategic goals in relation to postgraduate provision. The Graduate School is also represented on all School Boards and at Learning and Teaching Committee and its Sub-Committee for Postgraduate Research Degrees (SCPGRD). The Graduate School works closely with colleagues in Registry on the enhancement agenda for postgraduate studies at Brunel.

The Graduate School is also keen to encourage research events for postgraduate research students within schools and funding is sometimes available to support such events (see our conference prizes page).

The Graduate School also has an important role to play in incubating new postgraduate programmes for the University, particularly in cross-disciplinary domains that involve contributions from multiple academic schools. Academic staff are encouraged to contact the Graduate School Director to discuss their ideas. The Graduate School also supports the development of bids for doctoral training opportunities (such as through the Research Councils or Marie Curie), providing information on training offerings to go into proposals and supporting collaborations between schools where appropriate.
