What does it mean to learn independently?

Brunel provides you with a wide variety of services and resources to help ensure your success at university, but it is up to you to take advantage of them.  This is what learning independently at the university level is all about - you must take responsibility for your education and recognise that you will get out as much as you put in.

Manage your time

One of the first skills to master as an independent learner is how to make the most of the time you have.  This is difficult when all sorts of new opportunities and activities come your way as you start university.  Never lose sight of your main reason for being here: to get an excellent education.  To begin figuring out how much time you really have and how to make the most of it, click the button below and try out our time management tutorial (for use on Flash enabled devices only).

Make the most of feedback

In order to improve consistently, you must learn how to understand and apply feedback from others.  You will receive advice from all directions at Brunel, so be sure to utilise it!  Our working with feedback tutorial will help you discover the many ways in which you'll receive feedback, and to learn how to make it work for you (for use on Flash enabled devices only).

Communicate effectively

Writing at the university level entails greater sophistication, critical analysis, and more structure than you may be used to.  While the ASK service is here to help you improve, ultimately you must take responsibility to become a better writer by investing time in reading, drafting, editing and proofreading.  To help you learn about what will be expected of you, see our introductory video on 'What is Academic Writing'?
