Alerting services

You can receive updates about the latest literature in your research field by creating either an e-mail alert or an RSS feed. To create an RSS feed using RefWorks, see the RefWorks: collecting references page. If you create an e-mail alert, you will receive regular e-mails containing new references. Procedures vary by database or database platform, but you always need to register with the database first:

Ebscohost databases: Academic Search Complete, Business Source Premier, CINAHL Plus, GreenFile, Historical Abs, LISTA, MLA, PsycInfo and SportDiscus

OvidSP databases: AMED and Medline

  1. Open one (or more) of the Ebscohost databases
  2. Link to <Sign in>, near the top right corner of the screen
  3. Login to Ebscohost (or register if you have not already done so)
  4. Perform a search
  5. Link to <Alert/Save/Share>, above the results
  6. Link to <E-mail Alert>
  7. Enter your e-mail address
  8. Select the frequency, e.g. once a month
  9. Link to the <Save Alert> button
  10. You should receive an e-mail confirmation that your alert has been successfully created
  11. To view your existing Ebscohost alerts, link to <Search History> and then <Retrieve Alerts>

Emerald

  1. Open Emerald
  2. Link to <Login>, near the top left corner of the screen (or link to <Register> if you have not already done so)
  3. Login to Emerald
  4. Perform a search
  5. Link to <Add Saved Search Alert>, above the results
  6. Enter an alert name
  7. Adjust the number of results required (if necessary)
  8. Link to the <Add> button

IEEE/IET Electronic Library

  1. Open IEEE/IET Electronic Library (IEEE Xplore)
  2. Link to the <Sign out> button
  3. Link to <Sign in> (or link to <Register> if you have not already done so)
  4. Sign in to IEEE/IET Electronic Library
  5. Perform a search
  6. Link to <Set Search Alert>, above the results
  7. Give your search a name
  8. Link to the <Save> button
  9. To view your existing IEEE alerts, link to <My Settings\ Saved Searches>

Institute of Physics

  1. Open Institute of Physics
  2. Link to <Login>, near the top left corner of the screen (or link to <Create Account> if you have not already done so)
  3. Login to Institute of Physics
  4. Perform a search
  5. Link to <Add to my Alerts>

  3. Login to OvidSP (or link to <Create a new Personal Account>, if you have not already done so)

  5. Perform a search

  7. Link to <Auto Alert>
  8. Enter a search name
  9. Select the scheduling, e.g. monthly
  10. Link to the <Save> button
  11. To view your existing OvidSP alerts, link to the <View Saved> button

  7. Select the scheduling and duration, e.g. one year
  8. Link to the <Create alert> button
  9. You should receive an e-mail confirmation that your alert has been successfully created
  10. To view your existing ProQuest alerts, link to <My Research> and then <Alerts>

Sage

  1. Open Sage
  2. Link to <Sign In>, near the top of the screen
  3. Sign in to Sage (or register if you have not already done so)
  4. Perform a search
  5. Link to <Save as Alert> in the right hand side column
  6. To view your existing Sage alerts, link to <View current email Alerts>

Scopus

  1. Open Scopus
  2. Link to <Login>, near the top right corner of the screen (or link to <Register> if you have not already done so)
  3. Login to Scopus
  4. Perform a search
  5. Link to <Set Alert>, above the results
  6. Select the frequency, e.g. monthly
  7. Link to the <Create> button
  8. To view your existing Scopus alerts, link to <My Alerts>

Web of Knowledge databases: Web of Science

  1. Open Web of Science
  2. Link to <Sign in> near the top of the screen
  3. Sign in to Web of Science (or register if you have not already done so)
  4. Perform a search
  5. Link to <Search History>
  6. Link to the <Save History/Create Alert> button
  7. Enter a search name in the “History Name” box
  8. Check the “Send me e-mail Alerts” box
  9. Select the frequency, e.g. monthly
  10. Link to the <Save> button
