Individual databases offer a more detailed comprehensive search.  Those most relevant to your subject area have been selected below. For guidance on more specific types of information, such as Market Research, Raw Data, Standards and Patents, please see the links on our Research page.

Access to these e-resources is restricted to the students and staff of Brunel University for licensing and technical reasons. Some licence agreements may exclude access to databases and their contents from certain countries.     Academic Search Complete

    Contains full text articles from over 5,000 journals, covering many subjects, including anthropology, politics, political science, psychology, psychiatry, sociology and social work.

    IBSS: International Bibliography of the Social Sciences

    International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, from 1951 to date on the new ProQuest integrated platform (this has the option to search other databases, too). Coverage includes Anthropology, Sociology, Economics and Politics. Some linked full text is available. Updated weekly.

    OECD Health Data

    Offers comparable statistics on health and health care systems for 30 OECD countries, with some time series going back to 1960

    Oxford English Dictionary

    The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is an etymological dictionary which is widely acknowledged as the most comprehensive record of the English language, tracing the evolution and use of more than 600,000 words through 3 million quotations. OED Online gives access to latest text of the full Oxford English Dictionary, the Historical Thesaurus of the OED and enable users new ways to explore the English language:

    Search for new words by year, decade, or any date range.
    Set language in context: search by place, language type, and date to discover the impact of world events.
    OED Online is revised and updated at regular intervals and covers British, American, and other varieties of English, and all types of use, from formal to slang.

    PsycInfo

    Psychology and related topics; abstracts of articles from over 1400 journals, dissertations and books, from 1872 to date. Over 50,000 references are added annually. Popular literature is excluded. This abstract only database is updated monthly. Use Article Linker to check for full text online sources.

    Scopus

    Scopus is the largest ever bibliographic database and indexes over 20,000 titles from science, technology, medicine and the social sciences. This abstract only database is updated daily. Use Article Linker (AL - link to full text) to check for full text online sources.

A free online resource owned and managed by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE). It provides a single point of access to the UK's most extensive range of social care knowledge.

SWAP (Social Policy and Social Work)
SWAP is the Social Policy and Social Work subject centre with the Higher Education Academy: the UK-wide academy with the main aim of promoting high quality learning, teaching and assessment in our subject areas.

Department of Health
The Department of Health web site, this contains information about the department and also provides access to health and social care policy, guidance and publications for NHS and social care professionals

Department of Work and Pensions
The Department is responsible for delivering support and advice through a modern network of services to people of working age, employers, pensioners, families and children and disabled people.

Organisations' websites

British Association of Social Workers
Contains information for its members including BASW's code of ethics. Also provides comprehensive list of publications produced by the society including information on the four journals they produce

Care Quality Commission

The independent regulator of all health and social care services in England. The Commission's role is to make sure that care provided by hospitals, dentists, ambulances, care homes and services in people’s own homes and elsewhere meets government standards of quality and safety.

Centre for Housing Policy
"The Centre for Housing Policy is part of the Department of Social Policy and Social Work and the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences (IRISS) within the University of York. The Centre is a member of the UK Housing Studies Association and the European Network of Housing Research."

Child and adolescent mental health
The CAMH website provides information on mental health problems particularly affecting children and adolescents, including ADHD, autism, bullying, depression, eating disorders, OCD, psychosis, and substance abuse.

Drugscope
DrugScope is the UK's leading independent centre of expertise on drugs. The website includes details of their library, and access to DrugData, the library database.

General Social Care Council
General Social Care Council is the social care workforce regulator. It will register social care workers and regulate their conduct and training.

Institute for Public Policy Research

IPPR, the Institute for Public Policy Research, is the UK’s leading progressive thinktank. It produces research and policy ideas for a fair, democratic and sustainable world.

Social Care Institute for Excellence
This has taken over much of the work previously carried out by the National Institute for Social Work. SCIE promotes knowledge about good practice in the Social Work sector. Using knowledge gathered from diverse sources and a broad range of people and organisations, it develops resources to support service users and those working in social care
