CrossFit Returns to Brunel

On the back of a successful debut competition last year, the London Throwdown event returned to the Indoor Athletics Centre bigger and better, with a showcase event for the Crossfit community.  With 150 Males, 100 Females, 30 Male Masters, 20 Female Masters and £5000 prize money, the 2013 London Throwdown was promoted as the largest individual competitive fitness event in Europe.

It may not be a household name in the UK but it is a combination of weightlifting, sprinting, gymnastics, powerlifting, kettle-bell lifts, plyometrics, rowing, and medicine ball drills. The London Throwdown competition at Brunel was the final event for the competitors, who had already successful made it through the qualifying rounds.

Throughout the weekend competitors faced a number of final round WODs (work out of the day), which is a combination of different exercises that must be completed within a set time limit. Athletes score points for completing all the exercises in the fastest time.  After each round the slowest athletes to complete the WOD are eliminated.  The group is then whittled down until there are only a handful of competitors left for the final WOD. In the final WOD all previous scores are reset and whoever completes the final round in the quickest time is crowned the winner.

Crossfit workouts are typically short—20 minutes or less—and intense, demanding all-out physical exertion.   It’s not always about the race against the clock, sometimes just to complete the exercises within the time limit is challenging enough!
