Profile

I became a lecturer in Occupational Therapy at Brunel in 1997, after working in practice for many years. I qualified as an occupational therapist from the London School of Occupational Therapy (now Brunel) in 1980 and have had a varied clinical experience. I specialised in neurological rehabilitation, subsequently worked with children with movement disorders in special and mainstream schools, and then in community rehabilitation of older people.

I currently lead the MSc Occupational Therapy (pre-registration) programme. I teach on both undergraduate and post-graduate allied health programmes within the School. I held an honorary research occupational therapy post with the South West London and St Georges Mental Health Trust (Older Peoples directorate) from 2003- 2008.

I was involved in the development and implementation of the Occupational Rehabilitation Training and Certification programme within the School, in conjunction with Work Matters (UNUM) (2006-10).

I have also been involved in running and contributing to Masterclasses for practice colleagues on Falls (November 2010) and End of Life Care (November 2010).

I have been a member of:

· The Health and Social Care Professions Council since 1980

· The British Association of Occupational Therapists since 1980

· British Society of Gerontology – 2004 – to date

· College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section for Older People (2004 to date)

· British Society of Geriatrics Falls and Bone Health specialist Section (2010-date)

· World Federation of Occupational Therapists (2005 to date)

I have an interest in occupational therapy and successful ageing and the use of the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (WHO 2001) in occupational therapy practice. I have published in national and international peer reviewed journals, presented at national and international conferences, contributed to occupational therapy textbooks.  I project managed the production of the Guidelines for the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion in Occupational Therapy services for the College of Occupational Therapists published in 2004.

I have co-edited McIntyre A and Atwal A (eds.) (2005) Occupational Therapy with Older People, Blackwells Publishing, along with Anita Atwal, and Atwal A and McIntyre A (in press) Occupational Therapy with Older People (2nd ed.), for Wiley-Blackwells Publishing, Oxford,

Research

Research interests

·         Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies (BIAS)

·         Centre for Research in Rehabilitation (CRR)

·         Centre for Professional Practice (CPPR).

I am interested in qualitative research approaches, especially Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), using 1:1 and dyad interviews and focus group methods.  My particular research interests encompass aspects of intervention with older people, older people and falls, older people with dementia, older carers, ageing in place, home visits, acute care and physical rehabilitation, as well as a practice based research interest in the WHO (2001)’s ICF for OTs. My PhD research considered the experience of falling by older people with dementia and their carers.

I am currently a co-investigator in a collaborative project with divisional colleagues, British Polio Fellowship and the Disabled Living Foundation and funded by an award from the UK Occupational Therapy Foundation of College of Occupational Therapists on National Guidelines for Measurement of Assistive Technology.  This research involved both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
