Dr Elizabeth McKay is Reader and Director of Occupational Therapy. Elizabeth was previously Senior Lecturer and Head of Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Limerick, Ireland where she established the Department as the only Graduate entry Master programme in Ireland leading to a qualification in occupational therapy. Elizabeth has previously held academic posts at York St John University and at St Martins Lancaster (now the University of Cumbria) as well as a previous post as a lecturer at Brunel University.

Elizabeth has a range of research interests including mental health issues such as women’s experiences, recovery journeys, stakeholders’ perspectives of services and barriers to participation and social inclusion. Currently she is leading an international study examining participation and inclusion for mental health service users utilising the WHO International Classification of Disability. Data have been collected in Ireland, Canada and Australia. She is joint PI on a project to evaluate palliative care delivered in the home environment in Ireland. This study funded by Atlantic Philanthropies involves service users, carers, staff and key external staff. This work is due for completion in December 2012.

From an educational perspective she continues her interest in professional development and education in occupational therapy with work on 2.1 models of supervision, emerging placements, transition into the workplace and examining inter- professional education ongoing.

Elizabeth is a member of Institute for the Study of Knowledge in Society (ISKS). In 2009 she was awarded and delivered the Barbara Sexton Lectureship at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Her publications to date include two books, several book chapters and articles in international occupational therapy and mental health publications. She reviews regularly for the British Journal of Occupational Therapy, Journal of Occupational Science and The Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. She was the occupational therapy representative on the Mental Health Commission (Ireland) Research Committee.

Elizabeth has served the professional organisation the College of Occupational Therapy holding local and National positions. She currently is a member of the College of Occupational Therapy Education Directors (COTED).

Currently, Elizabeth has a number of doctoral students whose work incorporates sustainability of assistive technology service, services users’ perspectives of engaging in service development, recovery focussed services, adolescent time-use and emerging placements in occupational therapy.
