Research
Research interests
Priscilla Harries is a Senior Lecturer and Research Lead for the occupational therapy division at Brunel University, West London. Priscilla worked as an occupational therapist in the fields of adolescent psychiatry, neurosurgery, eating disorders, psychosis and post partum psychiatry at the Bethlem and Maudsley Hospitals. During 1993 she worked as a volunteer lecturer/clinician in South India where she was involved in teaching BSc OT students from Madras University. She obtained an MSc OT from Exeter University in 1996 and her PhD from Brunel University in 2004. Her research interests are in decision making, clinical reasoning, elder abuse, community mental health, dyslexia, driving assessment, models and theoretical frameworks. She has developed a range of on-line training resources to support professional decision making in a number of these fields. She has held multiple nationally competitive research grants and has an extensive publication record. She is currently Chair of the Editorial board of British Journal of Occupational Therapists. She has been appointed to the Peer Review College of the ESRC and as a mentor to the NIHR Research Fellowship Scheme.

College of Occupational Therapists-Specialist Section: Mental Health (Member of Editorial Board for national peer reviewed journal publication 2006-2010 and voted Acting Chair of Editorial Board for 2010-11).
British Journal of Occupational Therapy (Member of Editorial Board for this national peer reviewed monthly journal publication 2010-2012 supported the Journal to be submitted for an Impact factor and now ‘listed’ with Thompson Reuters. Voted Chair of the Editorial Board 2012-2013. Voted Chair of Editorial Board for June 2012-13. ‘Occupational Therapy Mental Health’ during 2010: committee member and Acting Editor, completed term of office in Autumn 2011.
At the request of the College of Occupational Therapists, I applied and was appointed as a research mentor for the DoH NIHR Clinical Academic Training Programme (CAT) for Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professions.
I have been appointed to the ESRC Peer review College (2012-2014).
I have been invited to advise and consult with three Government departments (Department for Transport, Department of Health and Department for Education).
I have taken up opportunities to share and collaborate with colleagues, for example I have been an invited speaker and facilitator for events for the College of Occupational Therapists and the Allied Health Professions Research Network.
International Level:
Whilst Chair of the Editorial Board for the British Journal of Occupational Therapy reciprocal access agreements have been finalised with 3 other international journals, thereby promoting academic learning opportunities for 80,000 members of the profession worldwide.
Development and use of internationally valued web based educational resources e.g. I have been awarded a UK Occupational Therapists Research Foundation grant £79,975 (FEC £115,929) in order to develop a web-based decision aid to train occupational therapists’ optimal fitness-to-drive decisions for disabled and older drivers. This will be made freely avaiable for use in pre-registration occupational therapy programmes from 2015. I will undertake the project with collegaues in Australia between September 2012 –August 2015.
Invited lecturer: to educate students and academics in Canada, Finland, Australia and New Zealand. Invited PhD examiner for overseas students.
In 2013 I was made a Fellow of the College of Occupational Therapists in recognition of my outstanding contribution to the profession. (The College awarded only two fellowships internationally for 2013.) I have applied for promotion in order to have my professional development achievements formally recognised by Brunel University.

A freely available, open access, decision-training web technology, for occupational therapists in community mental health services, has been funded, developed, tested and adopted in clinical training and practice. This decision-training aid, approved and advocated by UK professional organisations, has been shown to have increased workforce capacity has been demonstrated through the improved referral prioritisation skills of novice occupational therapists from NHS Trusts and 29 UK Universities. NHS policies have been enhanced using the research, facilitating services being targeted at the most needy, thereby improving the quality and efficiency of this profession’s service.
