Profile

My areas of interest centre on the development and effective implementation of participation and participatory practices within both national and international social work. I completed my PhD in May 2010 having undertaken a Participatory Action Research project with NGOs in São Paulo, Brazil. Working alongside social welfare practitioners to develop and implement participatory practices with children and young people, we explored the personal as well as professional challenges of putting theory into practice. Through combining a wide range of participatory methods, including photography, diagramming, drama and interactive games with reflective interviews and discussion we worked to identify some of the main personal and institutional challenges for the development of participatory practice. As a result of this research, emotions and emotionality emerged as a central research theme and I plan to develop further research to explore the impact of emotions on participatory practice through an internationally comparative study between Brazil and the UK.
