Community Health Nursing / Health Studies

The Health Division is unique within the School of Health Sciences and Social Care in that it has a truly multidisciplinary focus. Our staff have a wide range of professional, subject and disciplinary backgrounds providing particular teaching expertise to our students and research expertise.

This expertise is applicable to many aspects of ‘health’ in its broadest sense and covers health research, health promotion and public health, health care law, health and social policy, community health care nursing, health economics, occupational health and safety, health management and counselling.

The courses we provide at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels build on our expertise and have a long history within the School. We offer post-registration community nursing courses through sponsorship with the National Health Service at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These programmes assist the professional development of specialist community health care practitioners. We also offer postgraduate courses in occupational health and safety, public health and health promotion and intend to offer an innovative post graduate programme in urgent care. These programmes enable students with heterogeneous ‘health’ backgrounds to study and contribute to people’s health at various stages of the life trajectory.

Many of our staff are active researchers and current collaborative projects are involved with organisations such as Quality of Life Group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer, Department of Trade and Industry backed Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with North West London Acute Trusts, Haringey Primary Care Trust, the Ethiopian Community Centre and the University of Magdeburg and the International Union of Health Promotion and Education. Staff research outputs reflect our experience and include seminal text books on health promotion and medication management in care of older people.
