Occupational Therapy

The Division of Occupational Therapy at Brunel University is one of the largest and longest established in the UK. It combines excellence in teaching and a developing research profile which combined provides quality education for our students.

Our courses are designed and taught by expert staff who are nationally and internationally recognised. They use their research and clinical expertise to ensure that the courses provided are evidence based and linked to current practice. Students benefit from a large, well qualified staff group, studying with students from a wide variety of backgrounds and the state of the art facilities which were opened by Her Royal Highness The Princes Royal, Patron of the College of Occupational Therapists.

In the Major Review of the programmes in 2005/06, we obtained the highest possible score.

At undergraduate level we offer a full time 3 year BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy with UK students being sponsored by the NHS. We have increasing numbers of overseas students adding to our diverse student population. Our 4 year part time BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy is designed primarily for staff already working in the NHS and Social Services and most students are sponsored by the NHS.

For qualified occupational therapists we offer an MSc Occupational Therapy and MSc Hand Therapy which can be studied full time over one year or part time over 2 – 3 years. Overseas students often choose to study full time while most part time students combine study with work in practice. Alternatively, individual MSc modules can be studied on a stand alone basis contributing to continuing professional development or modules can be linked to form a Post Graduate Certificate or Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Therapy or Hand Therapy with the later linked to the British Association of Hand Therapy accreditation system. In addition we offer a credit rated short course, Foundation of Practice Placement in Occupational Therapy.

Occupational therapy staff are active researchers and regularly publish in National and International journals and write and edit books. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, 15 occupational therapy staff had their research entered. Our research activity is expanding and most is focused on current practice and linked with NHS Trusts or Social Service Departments. Many staff are members of the Centre for Professional Practice Research.

Current research includes patients’ perspectives of occupation and occupational therapy in mental health units, falls in people with dementia, home assessments for older people in acute settings, rehabilitation for older people and lower back pain.

We are a member of the European Network http://enothe.eu/index.php
