BSc Physiotherapy

''When I started the course I was really nervous but excited at the same time. First Year is quite intense with the learning but the tutorials are a really good way of interactively learning. I remember the first tutorial I went to we had to locate the bony points on the pelvis and the femoral pulse so by the end of the first session everyone was at ease with each other and it was actually a good ice breaker, as everyone is in exactly the same position! There is a wide variety of students on the course…students straight from college, students who have taken a gap year, students who have already done a degree, mature students and there is no segregation, everyone just mixes and gets on well with each other.''

Saskia Booth
Part-time Physiotherapy Student 2006-2010

''After receiving excellent Physiotherapy treatment for an ankle injury at the age of 16, I decided I wanted to become a Physiotherapist. However, as it is one of the most competitive courses, I was unable to secure a place at University after my ‘A’ levels. I went on the study Sport Science and gained a couple of years experience as a Physiotherapy Assistant. I chose Brunel University as it is just one of a couple of Universities that offer the 4 year part-time course. Immediately on enquiring about the course, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. This support continued throughout and after the course ended.

Studying and working part-time was a challenge, but it enabled me to gain further physiotherapy skills beyond my clinical placements. Through completing all practical skill sessions with the other part-time students, a strong bond was built in the group which provided support throughout the course. Some aspects of the course were studied with the Occupational Therapists, which I believe is paramount in facilitating multidisciplinary working.
The course was well structured throughout, with practical experience supported by theoretical knowledge to enhance clinical reasoning skills. The university is renowned for how it prepares its students for clinical placement. I found that due to the preparation I had, I was able to gain excellent experience while on placement. Being London based, the University has access to all the top hospitals, allowing students to gain a wide variety of experience. There was excellent communication between students and staff when it came to placement selection. This was especially key for the part-time students where the university did their best to select placements near to where people lived.
In this competitive environment, the course prepared us well for our careers. It is a credit to the course and especially my tutors that I was very fortunate to get a Band 5 post at one of the UKs leading heart and lung tertiary institutes. I would recommend Brunel University to anybody considering studying Physiotherapy there. I couldn’t have had a better experience.''

Alex Johnson

BSc Physiotherapy

Having just finished three years studying physiotherapy at Brunel I am well placed to let you know how good it is!

I initially chose Brunel as I liked the idea of studying at a London university as placements included some at major London teaching hospitals. The fact that Brunel is campus-based with everything, including accommodation all on one site made life that little bit easier. With a purpose built health sciences building fitted out with lots of equipment and teaching aids, plus staff who are not only extremely knowledgeable in their area of physiotherapy, but who also are good at and enjoy sharing this knowledge made the learning experience hugely enjoyable.

By not only working hard but by also playing hard within some of the many clubs and facilities available at and near Brunel, many lifelong friendships have been formed. The skills, knowledge and experiences gained have enabled me to begin my career as a chartered physiotherapist sooner rather than later.

So, I hope you enjoy studying at Brunel as much as I have.
