Social Work (incorporating Human Geography and Youth and Community Work)

The Social Work division is one of the largest and most vibrant in London and recruits about 130 students each year. We have an excellent academic record and reputation, and are currently ranked number one Social Work division in the UK (Guardian, 2012)’.

We offer a broad-based social work and policy/ welfare education through Undergraduate, Master’s and continuing professional development programmes incorporating Social Work, Youth Work Studies and Human Geography. We have a long-standing commitment to providing opportunities for mature applicants and for black and other ethnic minority students. Anti-discriminatory practice is at the core of our teaching and learning philosophy. Through programme partnership, the division maintains close links with social service and voluntary organisations and our enthusiastic staff group represents a wide range of practice and academic experience.

Social Work

Social workers need to be able to operate in highly complex professional environments and our Social Work courses focus on preparing our students for this by equipping them with the skills needed for critical thinking and reflective practice.

Youth Work Studies

Youth and Community Work professional training has been delivered at Brunel since 1972. The Centre for Youth Work Studies continues to offer postgraduate and distance learning courses that are viewed very positively within Youth Work in the UK and internationally.

Human Geography

Brunel’s team of human geographers has a strong reputation for teaching and research on geographies of citizenship and exclusion, with a particular focus on children, youth, gender, the environment and participative and engaged learning. The Centre for Human Geography offers a postgraduate degree in Children, Youth and International Development.

Research

We are also one of the top social work and social policy research institutions in London. Our current research activities take place through five University Research Centres:
