Social Work Alumni
The social work division of the school of Health Sciences and Social Care has set up a Social Work Alumni Association for all social work graduates of Brunel. We envisage that membership of the alumni will bring numerous benefits both for you and for us.
These include:
- To provide support for social workers and social work students through discussion of practice issues
- To provide a forum for discussion of the issues that affect social workers,
- To share experiences, developing a buddy system of support
- Forum for discussion of ‘ever changing’ policies and development of new policies
- To provide networking opportunities for students and ex-students related to finding jobs, career development opportunities, skills development
- To provide mentoring for final year students in order to facilitate a smoother transition from university to the world of work,
- To advise and discuss issues relating to finding work etc
- To make a contribution to the development of new modules such as the planned development of a skills module
- To make a contribution to teaching
- To set up a ‘chat room’/blog/Virtual Internet Forum’ for alumni members to exchange ideas, ask questions about practice and policies,
- To create awareness of progression/developments among alumni members
- To provide a ‘swop shop’ of ideas relating to: developing awareness of
- research practice tools, stress management activities, social work events etc
On Saturday 9th July 2011, Dr. Jean Clarke hosted the first meeting of former graduates of social work who attended a planning meeting with the expressed purpose of forming a Social Work Alumni Association.
To take these ideas forward, a management committee was formed on the same day. The committee has since met and have already begun to implement some of the ideas discussed at the first meeting.
Through liaison and consultation with Brunel’s Widening Participation mentoring scheme, some alumni members have also applied to become involved in the mentoring programme for our students.
We would like to hear from you if you are interested in becoming an active member of the association. If this is the case, and we hope you will be as keen as we are to become a member, we would like to invite you to attend our future planning meetings which are held every 3 months.
Please contact one of the following staff members if you are interested and we will send you further details about travel and parking facilities:
