Welcome by Head of School
Welcome to the School of Health Sciences and Social Care.
With its five academic divisions of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Biosciences, Social Work and Health Studies/Community Health, the School is one of the largest at Brunel University. We offer a modern and exciting range of courses with flexible modes of study at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to our 1,800 students. The majority of our courses take full advantage of the School's strong links with industry, commerce, and public service organisations by including work experience placements, or the opportunity of a sandwich year, as part of students' learning. As a result, our graduates become fit for the world of work and are highly employable.
The School has over 100 academic staff and 20 support staff involved in the delivery of research-led teaching and research activity. Our 40 research students and fellows add to the School's vibrant research culture and scholarly excellence. Research carried out within the School has not only pushed back the frontiers of knowledge and understanding, but also informed changes and developments, through implementation of findings, to the benefit of people, including patients and clients using health and social care services.
In 2006, the bicentennial year celebrating the birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the School moved to a new, purpose-built building on the University's Uxbridge Campus. This flagship building signifies Brunel University's investment in the future growth and development of the School of Health Sciences and Social Care, and of our staff and students. Together we will continue to enhance the "spirit of innovation" espoused by I K Brunel through research, and learning and teaching.
